Work in Canada

Recent changes to the Immigration Act now allow you limited opportunities to obtain employment while in Canada.

International students in full-time attendance at Canadian colleges may work in the following instances:

  • The position is on-campus and of a part-time nature. Off-campus employment of any kind is not permitted while the student is attending school.
  • A program related work term is essential to receiving a diploma/degree (i.e., in the case of certain co-operative programs).
  • Upon finishing their studies, international students may work for up to 12 months in employment related to their field of study.
Spouses of International Students
Non-student spouses may accept off-campus employment either on a part-time or full-time basis. It is illegal to accept any employment without written permission from the Minister of Manpower and Immigration. Failure to obtain the proper documentation could result in deportation.

Please understand that these changes in the Immigration Act will not affect application procedures for Student Authorization. You are still required to show proof of sufficient funds to support yourself (and your spouse) for the duration of your stay in Canada.

IMMIGRATION REGULATIONS ARE LEGISLATED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF CANADA AND ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE AT ANY TIME WITHOUT WRITTEN NOTICE TO YOU.

THEREFORE, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINING THE VALIDITY OF YOUR AUTHORIZATION AND STAYING INFORMED OF CHANGES IN IMMIGRATION LAW WHICH MAY DIRECTLY AFFECT YOU.
